“Let’s face it, young ambitious men have two goals in life: getting laid, and impressing other young ambitious men. You do neither in New York by saying you’re starting a startup.” The casual sexism in this article, by Antonio Garcia-Martinez of AdGrok, was just a by-product of his larger “point” - why New York will never be a key locus of tech startups. It was 2,039 words long. Yet he “focused on the majority for the sake of brevity” - and perpetuating some of the lamest stereotypes about New York, i-bankers, the relative creativity of people who cook, and What Women Want. Depressingly, it blew up last week on Twitter; not-depressingly, he gets blasted in the comments by people who are governed by reason and, you know, actually knowing about New York. He also got blasted on Twitter by Meaghan O’Connell of Tumblr, who wasn’t having any of it, as well as moi. Anyway. Read it if you feel like bonking your head against a wall. Sorry, it’s Monday morning. Maybe you should just skip it.
